Just in from Japan – Henkei C-20 Alert

Author: jetfire, October 8th, 2009

I came across a really good deal on a Japanese shopping site.  A contact over there was able to order these for me and then shipped over here to California.  Basically, Japanese stores will not ship international.  So you’d either have to know somebody who’s willing to order it for you.  Or you need to go through a shopping proxy.  Shopping proxies  normally charge 1,000-2,000 Yen fee (per product) or up to 10% of the order.  Luckily, my contact was willing to do this for free.   They are for a couple of friends and one to keep for MISB.  I got lucky because these have been sold out due to the fact that there is no Hasbro Universe counterpart.  Lately, they’ve been sold on ebay for $45-$60 plus shipping.  Yeah, I’ve been on a Henkei binge.

Mail Day – Henkei and Alternity

Author: jetfire, October 3rd, 2009

I wasn’t a fan of the Henkei line when they first came out.  To me they were just overpriced repaints of the Hasbro Classics line.  Well, they still are… but now I’m willing to pay up for them.   There is a certain exclusivity feel in owning a Henkei.  Plus, with all the 3rd party accessories being developed by the likes of Fansproject, the appeal for them became greater.  So after over a year and a half after release.  I finally picked some up.

Here’s what came in last week, all nicely wrapped in bubble.

The boxes look much nicer taken out.  They won’t be out for long though so they better enjoy this.

First up, Henkei C-05 Hot Rodimus (ヘンケイ トランスフォーマー C-05 ホットロディマス)
I believe the retail price was 2,100 Yen when it was first released in May 2008.  I bought them for much more. They were a little expensive but that’s the price of being late to the Henkei party.  I don’t think you will be able to find these at retail anymore due to the speculation of an upcoming Fansproject Protector kit (similar to the City Commander for Ultra Magnus).

IMG_2401

Second up, Henkei C-01 Convoy / Optimus Prime  (ヘンケイ トランスフォーマー  C-01 コンボイ)
Retail was 3,150 Yen.

IMG_2402

Lastly, Alternity Convoy A-01 (Vibrant Red)
トランスフォーマー オルタニティ A-01 NISSAN GTR/コンボイ バイブラントレッド

Retail on this guy was 4,725 Yen.  I didn’t preorder this when all the US etailers had him for sale.  They were all selling these for $49.99 USD.  I had to pay preimum because the Red version is sold out, even in Japan.  I’m sure Takara will produce more but who knows when and how much it will cost then.

I have the Silver and Black on the way…. I bought 2 of each.  1 to open, eventually.  The other will be kept MISB, to sell or collect.  I’m not sure yet.  If anybody is interested, let me know.  They can be for sale.  Money is king.

Targetmaster Aimless (for Misfire)

Author: jetfire, September 17th, 2009

Misfire now has his targetmaster, Aimless.  I bought a loose Misfire off ebay 6 months ago for the price of $18.  Now he has Aimless.  He set me back another $38.  I think it’s a good price, $56 total.  I’ve seen the set sell for over $90 in the past few months.

I put him side by side with Triggerhappy’s Targetmaster (Blowpipe).

How tall are they?  These Targetmasters measure about 2 inches in height.

G1 Bruticus

Author: jetfire, September 16th, 2009

Yo!  I got a sweet deal on a G1 Bruticus.  I picked him up on the TFW2005 forum for $50 shipped.  I think that’s pretty sweet.  He came in pretty decent shape (for the price).  It’s cheaper than the newly released Encore too.  I received all the pieces, including an extra (big) gun.  The extra gun slightly worn but… now he has dual blasters.  Cool.  All the figures are in pretty good shape… no major wear or tear.   The seller even applied new reprolabels (that alone cost $15?).  The only problem I encountered was with Onslaught, he’s a bit loose.  When combined into Bruticus, the shoulders are loose.  Not too much of a problem as he will be for display.  He won’t be doing any battle scenes against Defensor any time soon.

I’m not a huge fan of Bruticus (toy) because of the dopey face.  Since, I have the rest of the G1 gestalts, I might as well have him too.  It’s after all… geewun!  The parts combine like any other gestalt.  In other words, simple.  Here’s a picture.

Repairing your G1 Mirage’s broken waist

Author: jetfire, September 8th, 2009

Don’t throw that junker away.  If you have G1 Mirage with a broken waist that’s otherwise in decent shape.  It can easily be repaired.  All you need to do is buy a real junker with bad stickers, broken arms, bad chrome or paint – whatever!  As long as the waist joint is intact, you can swap it out.   It really doesn’t matter what condition the junker is, as long as the waist pin isn’t broken.  This is because the entire piece is inside the body.  The thing that is external would be the pin and Mirage’s head.  So get a good head too.  Replace the piece into your Mirage and you should be good to go.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I bought a total junker (complete).  The chrome and paint were terrible.  The tires were worn.  There was nothing good about the junker I bought… The only piece I could salvage was the waist joint.  So, I went on ebay and looked for a decent shaped Mirage with a broken joint.  It’s a very common issue with this figure and I’ve seen plenty up for sale.

miragerepair-20090903-0759

It’s as simple as removing 3 screws.  1 screw on the chrome chest plate and 2 screws on the hip connector.  Here’s what it looks like on the broken Mirage.

miragerepair-20090903-0803

miragerepair-20090903-0804

miragerepair-20090903-0806

After you take off the screws and remove the chest and hip piece.  The broken parts should be taken out easily.

miragerepair-20090903-0807

Ok, just do the same for the junker you want the good waist from.  Here’s a shot of both.

miragerepair-20090903-0808

I ran into a problem when I tried to replace the good piece in my Mirage.  Apparently, the broken waist pin had a much smaller diameter than the good waist pin.  It wouldn’t fit into the original hip piece because the hole wasn’t big enough.  Hasbro must have figured out that this was a big problem and redesigned the part so that it doesn’t break as easily.  What I ended up doing was taking the old hip piece too.

miragerepair-20090903-0817

After taking out the parts, I went on to put them back together.  In the end, the decent shaped Mirage has a new waist.  My junker is now a useless piece of crap.

Note: I’ve learned that there were 2 (or more) versions of Mirage.  The pre-rub version (no rub sign) and the one with a rub sign may actually have different shades of blue.  I was able to mix mine up as the blues looked the same to me.  So, be cautious when purchasing a replacement Mirage.  You might get a different color head and hip (if the one you have has a smaller hole).

The Real TWINS! (Sunstreaker & Sideswipe)

Author: starscream, August 30th, 2009

I’ve been meaning to do this for a while now.  So these are the real twins and none of that ROTF troll twin garbage of late.  I actually don’t have G1 Sunstreaker, but I do have the red Diakron (pre-transformers) version.  This version actually displays well and shows off their fraternal similarities better in vehicle mode.  Although in time I will have to make room for the G1 when I find him at a decent price / condition.

Sunstreaker isn’t complete and only came with 1 vintage missile.  Got him for roughly $40 shipped and in very good condition.  The hand is actually a resin copy.  A pretty damn good copy.  It really only needs these 2 pieces to make his robot mode complete.  I find the shoulder pieces a bit distracting (and expensive).  I actually saw the shoulder pieces on ebay the other day and it went up to ~$30 shipped which was out of my set budget at the time.  But who knows I might actually spend more later to complete him depending on my mood.

Sideswipe is the TRU exclusive commemorative reissue.  He is complete and dead mint.  His missiles are still on the tree so I didn’t bother removing one for the pictures since I display both of them in vehicle mode.  Got him for $15 shipped.  I liked him so much I also have a MISB dupe and a MISB Red Alert from the same series.  I do want the G2 mold but not actively looking.

I wasn’t ever into the Autobot cars when I was growing up.  But having them now, I must say these guys are a must have in any collection.  Even with Sunstreaker’s disproportioned (ape-like) robot mode, he is a gem.  And Sideswipe just looks damn good.  Their transformations are not intricate, but both are satisfying to say the least.  Parts of their transformations can even be seen in modern toys; notably how Sunstreaker’s arms fold up (i.e. Alternators and Universe).

They both have plenty of solid, diecast and chrome parts.  Sideswipe is by far the heavier of the two.  Interestingly enough, the feet on both figures is where the diecast resides (the rear section for Sideswipe, and the front section for Sunstreaker).  It’s amazing even over 25 years ago how well these toys held up in both engineering and quality compared to today’s toys.  I do have the Universe versions of both of them, but Sideswipe is currently MOSC and staying that way until I find more room to display them, else I would have had them in this write up as well.

For any Transformers fans, get these guys now.  Sunstreaker is going to be the more expensive of the two simply because Hasbro/Takara either lost or damaged the mold.  So no new Sunstreakers are available unless you want to fare into the KO realm.  Nothing wrong with knock offs as I do have some, but there will be quality issues regardless.  And they’re quite expensive to boot, so might as well spend $30 more for vintage.

Anyways on to the pictures.  You can see an added bonus.  Sideswipe and his mini-me counterpart.  Very cool toy as well.  Too bad there isn’t a Sunstreaker WST.
